At the beginning of this episode of Murder She Wrote we are told that Miko Ishida has been working hard in New York City, translating traditional Japanese poetry: haiku. If you read this Wikipedia article you will see that translating haikus from one language to another is more common than I thought. Translating them from English into Polish for example. Who knew? Certainly not me. Anyway, Jessica has arrived from New York with an envelope containing a first edition of Miko’s book, From the Heart.

At the end of the episode there is another envelope which also seems to contain Miko’s new book which is a romance; she has finally has finally decided how it ends.

Here we have an author, a title, and a publisher. The holy grail of fictional books. And you don’t often get that. Except is it translated haikus? Or is it a romance?

As I write this in September 2024 GREAT! TV is celebrating 40 years of Murder She Wrote, so I have had plenty of opportunity to catch up on lots of episodes. Recently spotted books by Jessica Fletcher include The Stain on the Stairs (S3 E21), The Mystery of the Mutilated Minion (S3 E22) and The Belgrave Murders (S4 E21). Towards the end of the series Jessica is said to have written 23 books. I wonder if the programme makers ever actually counted them up?
