Misery’s Return by Paul Sheldon

Title: Misery’s Return

Author: Paul Sheldon

Publisher: Not known (it may say in the book but I haven’t read it)

Source book: Misery by Stephen King

Paul Sheldon has had considerable commercial success with his series of romantic books about Misery Carmichael née Chastain, set in Victorian times. Paul sneers at romantic fiction and wants to write more serious literary novels. So despite his success, he kills off Misery in the fourth book of the series, Misery’s Child, causing her to die in childbirth.

Completely mad Misery Chastain super fan Annie Wilkes kidnaps and imprisons Paul Sheldon, chopping bits of him off to force him to write a new Misery book. Despite having to use a second hand typewriter without an N, Paul rapidly produces his best book so far; Misery’s Return. When Paul finally escapes, Misery’s Return becomes a best-seller.

According to Stephen King fandom, the Misery books mentioned in the original Misery are Misery’s Quest, Misery’s Lover, Misery’s Child, Misery’s Return, Misery’s Journey, Misery’s Paradise and Misery Unchained.

Also, and only mentioned in the film, are Misery’s Search, Misery’s Challenge, Misery’s Trial, Misery’s Triumph, Misery’s Dilemma and Misery’s Love. A pity Paul Sheldon can’t think of any more interesting book titles.

Can you tell I probably wouldn’t have the Misery books on my bedside table if they were real? I read a few of this style of book when I was about 14, when everyone in my year was reading them, but I quickly moved on to action thrillers, also very popular, and science fiction which nobody else wanted to read.

Paul Sheldon is also the author of Fast Cars, and (only mentioned in the film) The Higher Education of J Philip Stone.
