This is one of the odder Murder She Wrote episodes. 

Jessica visits renowned playwright Eugene McClenden, who wears the most extraordinary hair piece (it looks a bit like a guinea pig), and even manages to look really rather thrilled at the prospect of marriage to the playwright.

But oh deary me, what a load of appalling southern accents. Look, I have never been anywhere further south than New York City (unless you count LAX), but I have seen numerous episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, Atlanta, and none of the brides to be or their families carry on like these sub Tennessee Williams characters. 

So, Eugene and his weird hair piece have written a number of successful plays, and we learn the name of one: Somber Twilight. Which I would prefer to spell Sombre Twilight. Anyway, Eugene has plenty of money sloshing around which several characters would really like to inherit, and there’s an aging actress desperate for a part in the new play, even though she is far too old for the part she’s set her heart on. Not entirely sure what this play is about, but it doesn’t sound very cheerful.

In S8 E20 Angel of Death, we encounter a different famous playwright, Martin Tremaine, who has written a new play, Angel of Death. He is feeling very low following his wife’s suicide, and Jessica finds his play dark and gloomy. Unfortunately Martin’s wife killed herself because of his many affairs, so we don’t feel all that sympathetic towards him. And it’s hard to care much when Barney Gunderson, who will be directing the new play, tells us he will be making major changes.
