Some New Beginnings by Selina Meyer
Title: Some New Beginnings: Our Next American Journey
Author: Selina Meyer
Publisher: not known
Source: TV series Veep
Having hugely enjoyed The West Wing, and the podcast The West Wing Weekly, I was very disappointed not to enjoy Veep at all. I didn’t enjoy the style of comedy, it’s not my thing at all, and to be honest I just couldn’t cope with the incessant swearing. Swearing is fine to emphasise feelings and make a point, but swearing all the time because you can’t be arsed to use a different word is… childish and boring. I really couldn’t understand how come Veep won so many Emmys. You can tell I wasn’t invited to be on the awards panel (I suppose there is one?).
I really like the artwork that HBO produced for the series though.
Anyway. I came across a photograph of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Vice President Selina Meyer, sitting in a bookshop with piles of her book Some New Beginnings around her. So I deduced that she had written a book. In fact, we discover that she has written two.
Politicians in the United States seem to write a lot of books. Not always with the effect they hoped for. For example, Kristi Noem, Governor of South Dakota at the time of writing, for example, might regret having written No Going Back.
Selena’s second book A Woman First: First Woman is not that well received. Well, what can you expect? And, oh dear, look at that, apparently you can now buy it on Amazon. Of course you can. Somehow it seems OK for the author of a book containing a fictional book to turn that fictional book into a real book (see JK Rowling), but I’m not really sure how I feel about a fictional book like Selena’s, from a TV show, suddenly available to buy in real life.
