Will Stanton, seventh son of a seventh son, becomes the youngest of the Old Ones on his eleventh birthday, just before Christmas. His Master, Merriman Lyon, currently masquerading as the butler at the local Manor House, shows the Book of Gramarye to Will as part of his education. Merriman tells Will it is the oldest book in the world and as it’s written in the Old Speach it can only be understood by an Old One. Each page has a heading such as Of Flying, Of Challenge, Of the Words of Power, Of Resistance and Of Time Through the Doors. As Will reads each heading he experiences the sensation of flying, and sees the tops of mountains as though he were there, or feels that he is swimming in rivers or the sea.
When Will has finished reading the book and learning his inheritance, the book is destroyed.
