Title: The Lives of Famous Austrian Composers

Author: Karl Anserl

Publisher: not known

Source book: The School at the Chalet by Elinor M Brent Dyer (Chalet School #1)

When searching for fictional books within EBD’s Chalet School series, it is easy to look out for books by successful fictional author Josephine M Bettany, and stop there. But there are other books by other authors. And here is a book I had completely forgotten about. I must have read The School at the Chalet at least 10 times, probably more, so I really ought to have remembered Karl Anserl’s The Lives of Famous Austrian Composers. And I didn’t.

Karl Anserl, is better known to Chalet School readers as Herr Anserl, or Vater Bär (father bear) as naughty Joey Bettany nicknames him. He teaches piano at the School from its earliest beginnings. And he features most excitingly when he rescues baby Sybil Russell from her kidnappers, the Mystic M.

Presumably Vater Bär’s book includes Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Mahler and several members of the Strauss family. I wonder if he was a fan of Schoenberg?

Joey Bettany wins Vater Bär’s heart when she describes his book as “jolly decent”. I don’t believe this book is ever mentioned in any of the following 57 books in the series. I guess that just like me, EBD forgot all about it.
