One of the characters in this episode of NCIS, Angus Demint, has written a book. We get to see it. It’s a large format hardback, but slim, not so large as coffee table book, with a glossy paper cover. Apparently there are clues leading to buried treasure in the book, but at least one treasure seeker decides not to bother trying to work out the clues. He takes a short cut and kidnaps Angus’s daughter, demanding the coordinates of the treasure as ransom.

Of course Gibbs comes to the rescue with false coordinates and the team rescues the daughter and gets the bad guy.

A comment on IMDb tells me this treasure book plot is loosely based on the story of Forrest Fenn. He too wrote a book, The Thrill of the Chase: a Memoir, and stashed away a treasure for readers to find. Do read the Wikipedia page; it’s really worth it. I had never heard of Forrest Fenn but perhaps his story is well known to Americans. Honestly, I came away from reading about it aghast at how some people will do absolutely anything, including losing their lives, to find treasure.

And here’s an article from The Guardian about a long running treasure hunt in France. You may not know that in French owls are divided into hiboux, which are owls with ear tufts like an eagle owl, and chouettes, which are owls without ear tufts.

UK readers might remember a slightly less dangerous treasure hunt following the publication of Masquerade.

So, treasure seekers, let’s be careful out there.
