Millon de Floss writes: ‘The eight “Emperor Zhark” novels were written in the seventies by Handley Paige, an author whose previous works included Spacestation Z-5 and Revenge of the Thraals. With Zhark he hit upon a pastiche of everything a bad SF novel should ever be: weird worlds, tentacled aliens, space travel and square jawed fighter aces doing battle with a pantomime emperor who lived for no other reason than to cause evil and disharmony in the galaxy. His usual nemesis was Captain Brandt of the Space Corps, assistant by his alien partner Ashley. There have been two Zhark films starring Buck Stallion*, Zhark the Destroyer and Bad Day at Black Rock, neither of which was any good.’
The sixth book in the series is Zhark: End of Empire?
Zhark is a Jurisfiction agent and when not dominating the galaxy with extreme violence and riding roughshod over the rights of millions of peaceful life forms on a thousand star systems, he is partnered with Jurisfiction agent Mrs Tiggy-Winkle (a talking hedgehog). Zhark’s mother sounds scary too.
* Buck Stallion is a pseudonym used by Heathcliff (you know, from Wuthering Heights) in his acting career.
