Two time Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist Daniel Hannigan knows he is dying and turns over the notes from his final investigation to Jessica Fletcher. Daniel is convinced that an innocent man has been languishing in prison for 16 years and wants Jessica to write the book that proves it.
Jessica takes on the case, despite everyone doing their nastiest best to dissuade her. She worries that the convicted killer was not responsible for the murder, but also that Daniel’s suspect is probably not the murderer either. And she finds the research notes are not up to Daniel’s previous professional standards.
Naturally Jessica solves the case, but sadly not before Daniel dies. Hence the wake.
So Jessica rereads The Vietnam Indictment to remind herself of his skills as a writer and investigator. And, of course, works out who it was did the original murder. Of course she does.
