Source book: The Numbered Account by Ann Bridge
The Numbered Account is one of Ann Bridge’s 8 books about Julia Probyn, although the last one, Julia in Ireland, really shouldn’t count as it’s obviously a bandwagon book. In The Numbered Account Julia travels to Switzerland to help Mrs Hathaway when she falls ill while staying with an old friend. The friend, Herr Waechter, is obviously seriously rich. He lives in a large house in Gersau, furnished with beautiful antiques, lovely Persian rugs, and valuable paintings (including three Picassos).
Herr Waechter has written a rather erudite book about Swiss furniture. Of course we are not actually given a title, but as a fictitious book, it is so different from most (for a start, it’s nothing whatever to do with dragons or magic), that I thought I would include it here anyway. I mean, how many fictional books about antique furniture can you think of?
Herr Waechter is also working on a history of Gersau, which is in canton Schwyz.
Herr Waechter takes Julia with him when he visits his publisher in a suburb of Zurich. They produce some fine illustrated books, and also a number of English language books translated into German.
Eden-Verlag means Eden Publishers. There is an actual publisher called Eden based in Berlin.
