Title: The World of Cheese

Author: Not known

Publisher: Not known

Source Book: First Among Sequels by Jasper Fforde (Thursday Next #5)

The World of Cheese, in at least 8 volumes, must feel a bit of a kick in the teeth to residents of the Republic of England where cheese is heavily taxed and almost unavailable. However, cheese is readily available in the Socialist Republic of Wales, home of the finest cheeses known to man, and it’s just across the river Severn, so there’s a big cheese smuggling industry in the West Country.

Our heroine, Thursday Next, who lives in Swindon which isn’t far from Wales, is always short of funds and doesn’t scruple to engage in a little cheese trafficking herself. Purely for profit, obviously.

We do not discover if The World of Cheese is a Welsh book, but it seems reasonable to suggest it was not printed in England.

The Goliath Corporation has been trying to enter fiction for years. It’s complicated. And not something that we can imagine in our universe. Thursday thinks the nearest they have got is to synthesise a form of stodgy gunge from volumes 1-8 of The World of Cheese. She’s wrong. They’ve been a lot more successful than that; as she finds to her cost.

If you are a big Thursday Next fan you might be amused to learn that some recently built roads in Swindon have been named after characters in the series. And you can see the names on google maps. What fun!
