Great European Houses by Patrick Hammond

Title: Great European Houses

Author and Photographer: Patrick Hammond

Publisher: The Eagle Press

Source book: The Venetian House by Mary Nickson

Patrick Hammond has built up a reputation as a photographer but his book on Great European Houses was the first where he both took the pictures and wrote the text.

When we first meet Patrick he is researching a new book. It doesn’t have a title but seems to be focusing on very old houses still lived in by the original (or very long standing) owners. Hence his excitement when he is given an introduction to Evanthi Doukas, the owner of Vrahos on Corfu.

Patrick falls for Evanthi’s recently widowed granddaughter Victoria, and, quite a coincidence, it turns out that his famous artist uncle Hugh once had a passionate affair with Evanthi herself.

It’s probably quite hard to write a book about the great houses of Europe without calling it something like “great houses of Europe”, and there are a number of real books called something very similar. Only Patrick didn’t take the photographs for the real books. But they do look worth reading.
