Title: The Analects of Procrastinator With Critical Notes

Author: Henry (or Bill) Birkett

Publisher: Oxbridge Press (sometimes called Oxbridge University Press)

Source book: Private Enterprise by Angela Thirkell (Barsetshire #16)

Looking online, it seems that people (probably all of them Angela Thirkell fans) have put quite a lot of energy into investigating The Analects of Procrastinator. And they seem to have discovered nothing. Because unfortunately there’s nothing to discover. Procrastinator does not appear to have existed. If you search for Procrastinator the most popular result will lead you to Confucius (Kongzi or Kongfuzi or Zhongni).

Analects are a collection of short literary or philosophical extracts. Mr. Birkett, late headmaster of Southbridge School, has obviously devoted much of his time since he retired, not as is traditional, mowing the lawn, but to writing his critique of The Analects of Procrastinator. Mr Birkett, his staff, ex-staff, and even ex-pupils, seem often to have written books about Latin, or Roman authors. And it’s lucky for them that Barsetshire appears to be a remarkably well educated county, populated with keen fans of classical literature.

Procrastinator: a Roman, or possibly Byzantine philosopher; if he actually existed (which he didn’t), seems to have written quite difficult Latin only studied by senior students.
