The Blind Assassin by Laura Chase

Title: The Blind Assassin

Author: Laura Chase

Publisher: Not known

Source book: The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood

I know a lot of people really admire the writing of Margaret Atwood but it’s definitely not for me. I was given a copy of The Blind Assassin for Christmas some years ago and I read it to please the person who gave it to me. Beyond noting that The Blind Assassin includes a fictitious book called The Blind Assassin written by the unhappily married Iris Chase, although she attributes it to her sister Laura Chase, and The Blind Assassin also features a fictional science fiction book that may also be called The Blind Assassin which I think is probably written by a young communist called Alex Thomas (maybe), I absolutely hated this book and gave it away to the nearest charity shop as soon as possible. OK that sentence got a bit too long.  And remember, I only read this book once. It really gave me the creeps.

I read online that in Sakiel-Norn, a city on the planet Zircon, a killer for hire who was blinded as a child by slave labour in a carpet factory falls in love with a temple virgin. Really? A carpet factory? I normally enjoy science fiction and/or fantasy but frankly I didn’t fancy this fictional book.

Don’t pay any attention to my likes and dislikes. I am a very picky reader. You might enjoy The Blind Assassin very much. Lots of people appreciate it far more than I did. Not difficult. Or indeed you might enjoy The Blind Assassin. As I recall there’s quite a lot of it included in the source book. But because I only read it once years ago, and have no intention of reading it again, I’m afraid you don’t get very much detail.

I also really dislike cold shoulder tops and dresses, and absolutely loathe backless dresses. I mean, look at the cover design. It’s as though the universe was conspiring against me.

Here’s a blog post from someone who evidently enjoyed the book a whole lot more than I did.
