A Step Too Far by Lady Pomfret

Author: Lady Pomfret
Publisher: Not known but in several volumes
Source book: Pomfret Towers by Angela Thirkell (Barsetshire #6)
The Countess of Pomfret’s novel in several volumes is mentioned in a number of Angela Thirkell’s Barsetshire books. We aren’t given any information as to the plot or the characters, but for some reason (we never discover why), the book shocked Mr Gladstone* and that fact has gone down in local legend.
The only person in living memory to have actually read A Step Too Far, if only the first volume, is Anne Fielding in Peace Breaks Out.
I do wish we were told more about A Step Too Far. It’s so tantalising. Partly, I think, because Angela Thirkell was so clever at creating titles for all the books within her books that we are prepared to believe in them.
