I feel sure that Dr Spagbog has much to say of a thoughtful and scholarly nature about the beginnings of life on Earth. Unfortunately he is entirely wrong.

[Massive spoiler alert] Life on Earth began when Thursday Next’s father spiralled down into a single dot and traveled back three billion years into the past. The building blocks of life turn out to be Colonel Next, the carnation in his buttonhole and a handful of strawberry flavour Dream Topping. Impossible? No, just very very improbable.

Colonel Next had been eradicated long ago and therefore didn’t exist at all, but he still managed to father three children, and turn up nearly every day for breakfast with his wife. However, Thursday knows that this goodbye is forever. Especially when he fails to attend the Nolan Sisters concert the following evening. Third row tickets? Not to be missed.
