The Goliath Corporation has sold newly developed and extremely expensive plasma rifles to the English government. Apparently this weapon will be vital in overcoming the stalemate in the Crimea (the war has been dragging on for 130 years for goodness sake!). But.... the rifle doesn’t work.
It’s supposed to be a one-man portable piece of field artillery, firing supercharged quanta of pure energy. It’s supposed to cut through a foot (30cm approx) of armour plate at 100 yards (91m). But it’s cost almost a billion dollars and ‘the bloody thing doesn’t work’.
Jack Schitt of Goliath has decided on a risky plan. He will transport himself into The Plasma Rifle in War (sadly we have no information as to the author) via the handy Prose Portal machine invented by Mycroft Next. The rifle works in the book, so if he takes enough notes when he’s inside the book, perhaps he can build a rifle that works in the real world.
Hang on, why not steal a rifle inside the book and bring it home? Maybe that wouldn’t work.
However Jack Schitt doesn’t notice that the book he is transferred into is in fact a volume of Edgar Alan Poe poetry, disguised with a dust wrapper from The Plasma Rifle in War so not much chance of technical assistance there. And can he escape from Poe? And is there a Raven lurking around the corner?
