Commander Sam Vimes travels to Koom Valley to investigate the murder of several dwarfs and a sinister cover up. He takes with him a battered copy of Walking in the Koom Valley. Eric Wheelbrace has apparently walked and then written about every track bigger than a sheep trod in the Near Ramtops. His book includes a sketch map of Koom Valley. It’s the only map of the valley Vimes has ever seen.
The timing is delicate. It’s the anniversary of the Battle of Koom Valley, or at any rate, one of the battles of Koom Valley, that the Trolls and the Dwarfs have been fighting for centuries, and the Dwarfs and Trolls of Ankh-Morpork are itching for a fight.
Koom Valley seems to be a creepy place, full of zooming insects and running water. It’s easy for the unwary walker to be swept away and drowned. Vimes is certainly swept away but he lives to kick buttock another day, and solve the murder. Obviously.
