Title: The Secret Goldfish

Author: DB Caulfield

Publisher: Not known

Source book: The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger

A million years ago I read The Catcher in the Rye but wasn’t much impressed. And having just had a look at Wikipedia I realise I remember almost nothing about it at all. So I am more than ever baffled that so many people claim it is their favourite book. Weird.

Anyway, Holden Caulfield, main character of The Catcher in the Rye has an older brother called DB, who has written a book of short stories called The Secret Goldfish. Holden’s favourite story is also called The Secret Goldfish. It’s about a kid who won’t let anyone look at his goldfish because he bought it himself.

Unfortunately Holden isn’t happy that DB has moved to Hollywood to become a screen writer. He thinks that DB is prostituting himself when he could perhaps be a great writer.

And in fact The Secret Goldfish turns out to be a real book after all: David Means has written a book of short stories named after DB Caulfield’s fictional book.
