Birdwhistle’s Legendes and Antiquities of the Ramtops printed a report of the “duel” between Granny Weatherwax and would-be witch Diamanda. Which Granny Weatherwax won because she rescued little Pewsey Ogg when he strayed into the magic circle but Diamanda never stopped staring at the sun. Well, obviously any proper witch will rescue a small child before concentrating on a foolish contest.

King Verence of Lancre is about to marry ex-witch Magrat Garlick. He has sent off for a book on the marital arts (with woodcuts) but since his spelling might best be described as experimental, he accidentally receives a book on martial arts. Called simply Martial Arts (with woodcuts). Nanny Ogg’s youngest son Shawn Ogg, the castle guard (and herald, and cleaner, and butler), is thrilled to bits. Shawn reads Bows and Ammo, and Jane’s All the World’s Siege Weapons so books like Martial Arts are right up his street.

Verence mostly buys serious books about etiquette (he had kingship thrust upon him - he started life as a Fool or Court Jester - so he doesn’t really know the rules), animal breeding, and estate management. Hence Twurp’s Peerage of the Fifteen Mountains and the Sto Plains. And Ceremonies and Protocols of the Kingdom of Lancre which has an explanation of the rules and regulations for crowning a queen consort in Lancre.

Also mentioned in Lords and Ladies The Nanny Ogg Book of Cat Sayings: “He’s just an old soppy really”. This is Nanny Ogg describing her evil old cat Greebo, who is basically the terror of Lancre. Probably not a real book even on the Discworld but I imagine it would make a good Hogswatch present if it were.

Also mentioned, right at the end of Lords and Ladies, and in a footnote, The Taming of the Vole by Hwel the Playwright.
