Source book: The Chalet School and the Island by Elinor M Brent-Dyer

The Chalet School is on the move again: this time to the tiny island of St Briavels off the coast of South Wales. The drains at Plas Howell in Armishire have developed a problem, and last term a number of girls came down with a nasty illness. This obviously can’t go on; so the school is moved lock stock and barrel to the boringly named Big House.

Having a school on an island sets the scene for all sorts of swimming and boating plot lines, including issues with the little ferry that connects them to the mainland. There are a couple of other islands too. One has a community of monks, and another is a bird sanctuary watched over by the famous naturalist, writer and broadcaster; Kester Bellever.

Annis Lovell, a pupil at the Chalet School this term, is inspired to buy one of Mr Bellever’s books and chooses Sea Parrot, which is about puffins. I don’t think we learn the titles of any other of Mr Bellever’s books. Of course, puffins are not parrots but auks. Apparently there is a puffin festival on one of the Lofoten Islands but I don’t know if Kester Bellever knows about it.

It’s doubtful if Annis will enjoy this book. Her home circumstances are very unhappy and she is having a miserable term. I’m not sure a book about puffins will really take her mind off her problems. However, [spoiler alert] don’t worry, it all works out for her in the end.
