We meet Gilderoy Lockhart, Order of Merlin, Third Class; Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defence League; and five times winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award, when he is taken on at Hogwarts as a temporary teacher. He’s a famous author who has not only written an autobiography, Magical Me, but also a series of travel and adventure books:
Break with a Banshee
Gadding with Ghouls
Holidays with Hags
Travels with Trolls
Voyages with Vampires
Wandering with Werewolves
Year with the Yeti
and also Gilderoy Lockhart’s Guide to Household Pests.
Because of the adventures in these books Gilderoy Lockhart is considered an appropriate candidate for the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. Unfortunately, the Wizarding authorities have been completely taken in by his lies and ambition: all the exciting exploits in the books are the exciting exploits of other wizards. Lockhart has used Memory Charms to ensure the actual heroes forget everything so that he can take the credit. Which is a pretty unpleasant way to carry on.
Naturally Harry Potter and his friends are behind Lockhart’s downfall.
You can read all about Gilderoy Lockhart on this webpage. Doubtless it tells you everything, almost everything (not the bit about lying his way to fame), that he might have written in his autobiography. Or you could go straight to the horse’s mouth: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
